Prayer is…petition

We finally come to the most widely form of prayer that we are familiar with.  It is simply asking God to grant us our desires.  We don’t usually have a problem asking God for anything and that’s what we should do….ask Him because He is ultimately the only one who can give us what we need or want.

The problem with our prayer petitions comes when that’s all that we do….ask God for what we want.  When we don’t have a Personal relationship with Him, Praise Him,  make Him a Priority, seek His Peace,  believe His Promises, trust the Power of prayer, then how can we ask Him to answer our prayers like we want Him to do?

If you had a friend who constantly asked for something without ever taking time to work on a relationship, would you want to keep helping them?   Would you keep helping them?  I wouldn’t and I feel certain that The Holy Spirit of God is grieved when we treat our prayer life with Him as though it were a Christmas list….I want and I want and I want this and Oh, I want that too.

God does answer our prayers and He desires us to bring our petitions before Him.  God answered the prayers of Hannah for a child after she continually asked Him.  I “Samuel 1:27 tells us that:

For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

God gave Hannah a son, Samuel who was a great man of God, but she was also in a right relationship with God when she asked Him.  Back in verse 11, we see her praying for a man child from the Lord

And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

When Samuel was born and weaned, she gave him back to God by taking him to the temple and giving him to the priest where God taught him to serve.  She took her petition to the Lord seriously.  So many people in our day make empty promises to God during a bad time and when God answers their prayer, they forget where the answer came from.

Make your petitions known to God after you spend time with Him in worship and praise.  He is worthy of our adoration and honor.
