Once you are sure that you are a born again believer in Jesus Christ, the next step that you need to take is to look at our target.
Who is your legacy going to? Whose life do you want to impact?
Certainly our families, our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters, brothers, parents, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Pretty much everyone that we know becomes a recipient of our legacy.
That can be scary. Think about the opportunity that you have to leave an important lasting legacy to everyone that you know. That is also quite a responsibility don’t you think?
This will really put a new perspective on your legacy:
Take a large piece of paper and begin writing the names of everyone that you know. Just first names are fine but it they are a married couple make a separate entry for each of their names. Children, grands/great grands (if you have them), sisters, brothers, in-laws (if you have them), cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and neighbors, hairdresser/barber, neighbors and anyone else that you know. Take your time because after you finish your list, there will be more that come to your mind.
What you have just accomplished is called your “Sphere of influence”. That is a term used a lot in the sales industry. Remember that I used to sell real estate and so many things that I learned in my career has helped me to better understand the way the world works. Your sphere of influence are those people whose lives you come in contact with and have the ability to affect. Look at it like a Facebook friends list. Most of us have friend on our Facebook page. In fact, you and I might have a lot of the same friend, but there will be some friends that I have that you don’t. I have my sphere and you have yours.
That will be your assignment this week. To write the names of all of those people down who are in your sphere of influence. Don’t limit those who you don’t have daily contact with, just list all of the people that you know. That sounds easy but don’t just skip through quickly because you might forget someone who is really important.
I hope that you have been able to make a list of your sphere of influence contacts. Leave some room at the bottom as you meet new people or think of people that you had forgotten, you can add them to your list.
What do you do with this list? I knew that you were going to ask that question! I want you to really pray about this next step on this journey to leaving a lasting legacy.
I want you to go into the left margin on each name and write one of these three symbols:
Put an “S” by their name if that person is saved beyond any doubt as far as you know. If you have heard their testimony or their salvation experience, then go ahead and mark it with an “S”. Don’t just assume that they are saved because they go to church or carry a Bible. That’s like assuming that if you sit in a garage, you are a car!
Put an “L” by their name if you know that person is lost without God. If you have spent any time around a person, you will know if they are lost by their language, their actions, their habits usually give them away. It’s a sad thing to admit for a Christian, but the majority of the world is lost without God.
Put a “U” by the names of the people that you aren’t sure about. That will be the majority of your list. You will have more “U”s than anything else on your list when you get finished.
Once you have your list categorized, then the work will begin. I want to you to begin praying over your list, your sphere of influence. This list represents you lasting legacy. You might know some of the same people as someone else, but you may be that “one” that can reach them.
Work on your list and we will really get busy next week. Praying for you and your lists until next week, Margie Phil 1:3
